Zusammenfassung:•A process has been developed in the present study to prepare Hf55Cu28Ni5Al12 bulk metallic glass (BMG) alloy in bulk form.•Planetary ball milling, high energy ball milling and cryo milling were used to prepare BMG powder from melt spun ribbons.•Cryo-milled powders were found to be effective out of these milling methods.•MGs in bulk form with 99.8% density, was prepared using spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique.•Effect of pressure and temperature on the densification of BMG alloy in SPS has been studied in detail.•Hardness of SPS compacts were also studied in detail. The present work describes fabrication of cylindrical cross section bulk specimens of Hf-based bulk metallic glass by spark plasma sintering. Initially amorphous ribbons were made by vacuum melt spinning and different milling techniques such as planetary ball milling, high energy ball milling and cryo-milling were employed for converting ribbons into powders. Planetary ball milling of as spun ribbons did not yield powder. While powders (particle size75 µm and75 µm and75 µm and
