RICHARD BRYDGES BEECHEY: MORGAN O'DRISCOLL 19 APRIL

There was a distinctly nautical flavor to Morgan O'Driscoll's April 2021 sale. The catalogue cover featured Richard Brydges Beechey's dramatic Entrance to Cork Harbor and other notable works with a maritime theme included: George Maunsley Wheatley Atkinson's A Barque Passing Roches Point Lighthouse; Hendrik Adolf Schaep's The Rescue; and Thomas Rose Miles' Morning at the Nore. All these works were painted in the 19th century and while you could assume that they came from the same private collection, in fact they were all consigned by different people. Richard Brydges Beechey led an interesting life - or, in fact, a number of interesting lives. He joined the Royal Navy as a cadet at fourteen and rose to be a commander, and eventually a captain.
