Zusammenfassung: | Patrick Rothfuss's series The Kingkiller Chronicle has, as its model for magic, late Renaissance natural philosophy and occult sciences. The fantasy world and character follow this model closely, but Rothfuss also introduces terminology and technical objects that appear considerably more modern. His extrapolations from the magic lore, show how modern science, by favoring objectivity, gains social prestige and power but neglects humanistic ideals. Thus, the novels show not only how science evolved from occult philosophy but also, what it gained and what it lost by detaching itself from "magic." |
