Spatial shift‐share analysis: Some new developments

The traditional shift‐share analysis and its existing spatial versions fail to detect the simple effects related to the underlying spillovers derived from the neighbourhood and regional contexts. This paper presents a formulation of the spatial shift‐share that incorporates novel effects and classifies the regions in a multi‐contextual framework (national, neighbourhood and regional). The use of different benchmarks is valuable since the performance of some regional sectors can be diagnosed with a national focus, while for others, it may be necessary to resort to neighbourhood and regional characteristics. Thus, the technique facilitates the formulation of strategies to improve the regional economic planning. Resumen El análisis shift‐share tradicional y sus versiones espaciales existentes no detectan los efectos simples relacionados con los spillovers subyacentes derivados de los contextos de vecindad y regionales. En este artículo se presenta una formulación del shift‐share espacial que incorpora efectos novedosos y clasifica las regiones en un marco multicontextual (nacional, de vecindad y regional). La utilización de diferentes puntos de referencia es valiosa, ya que posibilita diagnosticar el desempeño de algunos sectores regionales mediante un enfoque nacional, mientras que para otros puede ser necesario recurrir a características de vecindad y regionales. Así pues, esta técnica facilita la formulación de estrategias para mejorar la planificación económica regional. 抄録 従来のシフト・シェア分析とその既存の空間的バージョンでは、近隣住区と地域コンテキストから派生した、基礎にあるスピルオーバーに関連する単純効果を検出できなかった。本稿は、新しい効果を組み込んだ、複数のコンテキストにおけるフレームワーク (全国・近隣・地域)において領域を分類する空間シフト・シェア分析法を提案する。いくつかの地域のセクターのパフォーマンスは国別に評価できるが、他のセクターでは近隣住区や地域の特性に頼らなければならない可能性があるため、異なるベンチマークを用いることは有益である。したがって、この手法は地域の経済計画を改善する戦略の策定を促進する。
