It was a golden age of astronomy (and still is): the beginning of lunar and planetary exploration, new techniques such as computer modelling and radio astronomy, and major advances in stellar evolution and cosmology. His PhD thesis focused on modelling the structure, evolution, and pulsation of massive stars.
