Zusammenfassung:[Display omitted] •Calcium borates incorporated with silver and zinc has been prepared.•The characterization results showed CaB2O4 and CaNaB5O9 as high temperature phases.•The CaB2O4 was favoured by the addition of Zn2+ and the CaNaB5O9 by Ag+.•The antibacterial efficiency of calcium borate has been increased many folds by incorporating silver and zinc in the matrix.•The MIC/MBC was found to be 2.0 ± 0.2 mg/mL. Calcium borates incorporated with silver and zinc have been prepared and evaluated for their antibacterial activities. Samples were characterized for phase purity using XRD technique, nature of chemical bonds using FTIR and morphology using SEM images. The antibacterial efficiency of the samples was studied against E. coli and S. aureus strains using macrodilution broth method. The influence of calcination temperature and phases formed were proved to have correlation with the antibacterial activity. The MIC and MBC for the water insoluble silver and zinc incorporated calcium borates, calcinated at 800 °C were evaluated as 2 mg/mL.
