EL MODELO NORTEAMERICANO COMO IDEAL EN PUGNA: ENTRE LA REPÚBLICA CRISTIANA Y EL REINO DE LA LIBERTAD INDÓMITA (BUENOS AIRES, 1855-1860)

Félix Frías, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, Estados Unidos, Siglo XIX, Cristianismo Abstract The article analyzes the different appropriations of the North American model that a group of actors, belonging to the political and intellectual elite of Buenos Aires, put forward during the 1850s and early 1860s. More specifically, in the first place, it focuses on journalistic controversies that involved Félix Frías, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento and Héctor Varela in 1855 and 1856, and, in the second place, during the debates that took place during the Reform Convention of the National Constitution of1860. The second one expressed a positive image of human freedom, emphasizing the ample liberties that the American institutions permitted. En este trabajo se afirma que este conjunto de polémicas -las cuales, en su mayor parte, giraron en torno a los conceptos de libertad y de progreso, junto a un interrogante de carácter general sobre el papel social y político de la religión en la Buenos Aires del período - dieron lugar a dos posiciones antagónicas como consecuencia de los diferentes lenguajes políticos que estructuraron las intervenciones de sus participantes2.
