Suicidio en Uruguay: mirada en perspectiva territorial

Este artículo busca comprender la configuración del acto suicida en Uruguay desde la perspectiva territorial, considerando dimensiones sociales y subjetivas. Como estudio de caso se escogió el Departamento de Rocha, que históricamente ha tenido altas tasas de suicidio. Se combinaron enfoques cuantitativos (estadísticas de suicidio, periodo 1963-2014) y cualitativos (etnografía). El análisis territorial constató la existencia de zonas que han concentrado mayores índices de suicidios, que coinciden con las mayores desigualdades territoriales del país, situación que se agravó con las medidas neoliberales de la década de los años noventa, que produjeron profundos resquebrajamientos sociales e incremento de las tasas de suicidios regionales y nacionales. This article looks to understand the configuration of the suicidal act in Uruguay from the territorial perspective, considering social and subjective dimensions. The Department of Rocha was selected as study case, with historical high suicide rates. Both qualitative (ethnography) and quantitative (suicide statistics, period 1963-2014) approaches were combined. The territorial analysis allowed to determine the existence of areas where there is a greater concentration of suicide rates, which in turn coincides with the greater territorial inequalities of the country. A situation that has aggravated with the neoliberal measures of the nineties, which produced deep social fragmentations and an increased regional and national suicide rates.
