In the introduction to her book, Releasing the Imagination: Essays on Education, the Arts, and Social Change (Jossey-Bass 1995), Maxine Greene notes, ". . . of all our cognitive capacities, imagination is the one that permits us to give credence to alternative realities. Call for 2004 Hoey Award Nominations The NCTE Edwin A. Hoey Award for Outstanding Middle Level Educator in the English Language Arts recognizes exceptional English language arts teachers in grades 5-8 who instill their own love of learning in their students. The Edwin A. Hoey Award winner will receive $2,500, plus up to $1,000 for expenses to attend the NCTE Annual Convention in November; a one-year complimentary NCTE membership; a one-year subscription to Voices from the Middle; and the opportunity to present at the NCTE Annual Convention.
