Zusammenfassung:Neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s disease differ between the sexes in severity and occurrence. Next to hormons, increasing evidence suggests stem cell-intrinsic mechanisms to account for pathologic sex-specific differences. Here, we discuss such sex-related intrinsic mechanisms and sex-specific differences in adult stem cells, neuronal development and neuroprotection. The reviewed observations emphazise the importance of considering sexual dimorphisms for medical treatment strategies.
