Zusammenfassung:This paper focuses on three controversial issues in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL). The first issue is concerned with different levels of and types of students enrolled into TCSOL programs, the second one is about the necessity of compiling nationalized TCSOL books, and the third is about teaching Chinese cultures in TCSOL. Based on my reflections on the development of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) in and outside China, I put forward some suggestions relevant to each of the three issues. The first suggestion is to gradually stop enrollment of BA students, restrict the expansion of Master programs and increase moderately the number of Doctoral programs in TCSOL. Also, more efforts should be made in enhancing the quality of postgraduate programs in TCSOL. Moreover, the postgraduate programs in TCSOL should be changed from taking Chinese students into enrolling overseas students as the major component of candidates.
