Economic Crisis, Taxes and the Quito Insurrection of 1765

A dramatic wave of popular uprisings swept Spanish America in the last half-century of colonial rule, most occurring in a rural setting. Among the most serious challenges to Spanish colonial rule was the urban insurrection in Quito Ecuador, then the capital of the Andean province. The decline in the region's textile industry and an increased tax burden served to precipitate the uprising.
