Alan’s approach to research and his colleagues

Our paths crossed many times. Some hallmarks of his research were his focus on topics people were talking about, his finding new sources of data, and his use of new econometric techniques. When we choose what to work on, how to approach it, and how to craft the narrative, we can all learn from Alan. Another way Alan’s memory can be truly honored is for us to realize that there is no reason why economics, a profession known for useful, insightful analysis of the sort that Alan excelled at, cannot also be known for its kindness.
