Zusammenfassung:Some of the more innovative and progressive ways in which the logistics function can make an even greater impact through the use of the latest information technologies are reported. Issues addressed include: 1. the need for information systems in making logistics decisions, 2. Kanban, just-in-time inventory and other innovative approaches to inventory management, 3. the issue of quality, and 4. strategic management of logistics information. Three initiatives for the future emerge as a result of the analysis: 1. There is a need to acknowledge the truly strategic value to the modern organization's information systems function, and more progress is needed in determining the most appropriate way for information systems and logistics functions to interact to use information more effectively. 2. Management and organizational strategies should be formulated to make the best use of information. 3. The information systems area should be viewed as an integral part of each and every other functional area of the firm, not as merely a service or support activity.
