Zusammenfassung: | This contribution analyses the quoted tobacco song with regard to its contents as well as to medial aspects. This 18th century song has to be contextualized within a specific discourse of religious and cultural history: It interprets the consumption of tobacco as a symbol of human transience. Communicated in manuscripts, treatises, and particularly in broadsheets, the song was mainly popularized during the early 19th century. Its lyrics strikingly bear a nexus in the form of a humorous raiment to a moral device employing a profane commodity (pipe) and a profane action (smoking) as a starting point. The song, thus, was intended to turn a leisurely pursuit into an honourable convention by assigning it a religiously existential meaning. |
