Coming to writing means to "get past the wall" or the multiple walls of interdiction that forbid individual expression. Exile is inextricably connected to foreignness, loss, and mourning. While it may produce silence, exile has also a tremendous potential to generate and nurture its opposite: a voice for those who are silent. Here, Ferraro considers the question of how "coming to writing" describes the creative process, how mourning becomes language, and how the emptiness of silence turns into word, in relation to the life and literary work of Italian Jewish writer Ebe Cagli Seidenberg.
