Zusammenfassung: | Roland Barthes's hermeneutic code contains the enigmas of a narrative which may be pursued and answered by the narrator or the characters themselves. For example, is Hemingway's Francis Macomber a coward, is Doctor Adams dishonest, and what does the woman want from the man in "Hills Like White Elephants"? An examination of logical presupposition in the three Hemingway stories reveals attempts on the part of speakers to establish a conspiratorial relation between themselves and addressees in an effort to solve enigmas. Presupposition is used in these cases because the speakers attempt to implicate the addressees in solutions to enigmas that the addressees would likely reject if they were asserted rather than presupposed. |
