The development of multimedia personal computers has brought a new method for linguistic atlas in the field of linguistic geography these days. So far various researchers in Japan have produced different linguistic atlases with computers, however, it is the first attempt in Japan to add speech sounds to linguistic atlases on computer screens. The linguistic atlas with voice is called "Speaking Linguistic Atlas" in the present paper. This study argues that Speaking Linguistic Atlas obviously differs in equipment with audio materials from traditional atlases and indicates that we can make pedagogical use of Speaking Linguistic Atlas in studies of field linguistics, especially, dialectology or in dialect speech perception.
