Zusammenfassung:•Friction melt-bonded spot welding is a suitable method to weld lap joints of dissimilar Ti/Al alloys.•The tensile shear load reaches 18.2 kN.•A nanoscale Al3Ti forms at the Ti/Al interface.•The temperature is approximately 570 °C at the Ti/Al interface during welding. This study used an unconventional friction melt-bonded spot welding (FMSW) to improve the mechanical performance of dissimilar Ti/Al joints. The temperature, microstructure, and mechanical properties were investigated. Results showed that FMSW was a suitable method to form nanoscale Al3Ti at Ti/Al interface. The maximum tensile shear load of joints reached 18.2 kN.
