Zusammenfassung: | The area-restricted nature of animal movements and the spatial pattern of habitats within a study area may interact to affect results of habitat-selection analyses. However, few studies measure habitat availability in a spatially explicit manner. We present a new method of describing habitat availability specifically for generating null models to test hypotheses regarding habitat selection by wildlife. The method accounts for both abundance and distribution of habitats, and for the relative mobility of animals. Inferences about habitat selection based on the method were different than those based on standard normal confidence intervals. Where an animal's home range is small relative to the size of habitat patches, high rates of type I error can be expected if analyses are not spatially explicit. |
