Why physicians start or stop prescribing a drug: Literature review and formulary implications

The drug product life cycle is affected by factors that influence the diffusion of a new drug into medical practice and its rate of adoption and relinquishment by individual physicians. These influencing factors are discussed in the context of four general categories: perceived attributes of drug innovations, communication channels, nature of the social system, and physician characteristics.
