Zusammenfassung:The purpose of this study was to investigate perceptual congruence between superiors and subordinates, in terms of specific communication criteria, and to relate that congruence to subordinate job satisfaction. The study also examined individual characteristics as they affected the congruence-satisfaction relationship. Questionnaires were given to hourly employees and their supervisors in 5 manufacturing firms. Respondents indicated on a 5-point scale how often each of 14 communication behaviors occurred during superior-subordinate interactions. Job satisfaction was measured through the assessment of 5 aspects of sources of job satisfaction. The results were tabulated on an overall basis, as well as by race and sex. The findings suggest that subordinates' perceptions of the supervisor-subordinate relationship may be more important to the congruence-satisfaction relationship than congruence. However, the study was by no means exhaustive and the need for more research is indicated.
