Taking the Pledge: Oliver Franks and the Negotiation of the North Atlantic Treaty

The process by which the North Atlantic Treaty was negotiated in 1948-49 is examined. The leading role that UK diplomat Sir Oliver Franks played in the writing of Article 5 of the treaty is discussed.
