An Enduring Commitment: The British Military's Role in Sierra Leone

The British military deployment to Sierra Leone in May 2000 marked the renewal of a long historical connection between the two countries. As a former British colony, from 1829-1961 the authorities in London were responsible for providing the administration and governance of their West African territory as well as safe-guarding its security. This entailed the creation of a dedicated local military structure, mixing local troops with seconded British officers to guard the frontiers of the small country against both external and internal threats.
