Mechanisms of Ligand Recognition in Myoglobin

The ability of the heme proteins myoglobin and hemoglobin to discriminate selectively between the binding of two small gaseous ligands--oxygen and carbon monoxide--is discussed. The underlying mechanisms have general applicability to all protein-ligand interactions.
