Zusammenfassung:A study was conducted to examine values of computer professionals in India and the implications for institution building and developmental processes in organizations. The data were collected through a questionnaire completed by 142 people. The results suggest that the preferences of the subjects were toward values oriented toward growth and development and toward individual and social well-being. However, there was a gap between values as criteria for evaluating others and the choices made for oneself, between stated values and practiced values, and between preferences at the conceptual level and choices in specific areas. Implications for institution building include: 1. Organizations need to work on clarifying and constructing values. 2. Institution-building processes could be improved if values were seen as choices. 3. Incorporating values into business decisions is an important, but often neglected, area.
