Stereotactic Heavy-Charged-Particle Bragg-Peak Radiation for Intracranial Arteriovenous Malformations

IN 1983, Kjellberg et al. presented follow-up on the first 74 patients with arteriovenous malformations of the brain treated with Bragg-peak proton-beam therapy. 1 Since then, stereotactic Bragg-peak radiation with protons or helium ions has been used to treat more than 1600 patients with arteriovenous malformations. 2 3 4 5 6 However, unresolved issues remain about appropriate criteria for patient selection, dose distribution and localization, the rate of vascular obliteration, the chance for clinical improvement, the risk of hemorrhage, and the incidence of complications.
