Zusammenfassung:From the data collected comparing the different names attributed to the island of Ischia in the course of history and the elements provided by the iconographic and literary sources, we reconstruct here a path marked by a tension between heaven and earth: since the island of the apes, as the natives of Ischia were to appear to the first settlers of Euboea, to the terrifying prison of Typhea, to arrive at a synthesis between these two representations, composed by the Alexandrian scholars who recover the theme of Gigantomachy. This synthesis is found, with variations and errors of understanding, among scholars of the Middle Ages and until the art of the Renaissance.
