Later, when Laurie advises Meg not to drink too much champagne because her mother wouldn't like it, she rebuffs him: "I'm not Meg, to-night; I'm 'a doll,' who does all sorts of crazy things. Eight inches tall, with pursed red lips, glossy golden-brown hair piled on top of her head, and a purple-and-white gingham dress, Meg was breathtaking, even if it was nearly impossible to make her stand up on her tiny, black-slippered feet.
