Zusammenfassung: | Though I invoked the disciplinary power of Freire above, institutional and local constraints unfortunately make it difficult, if not impossible, to enact his more activist goals, in which students and teachers do not only identify societal problems and reflect upon their social position and their use of language, but they productively contest the cultural, political, and economic forces that reproduce structures of inequality. Natural Languages, Authentic Voices, I state that I certainly do not condemn instructors who deploy (temporary) metaphors of authenticity, who celebrate their students' closeness' to their communities, and marvel at their students' inventive use of oral language (517), because I am aware of the motivational strategies that instructors may need to use depending upon certain institutional or classroom situations. |
