Zusammenfassung:This article considers the impact of a new market economy environment on the performance of different agricultural organizations with altered ownership and control structures, examining the necessary change in the institutional environment to enable a move from hierarchies to markets that most effectively allocate the available resources. Land reform and the privatization of agricultural organizations and food-processing firms are the two major benchmarks of the institutional change currently under way in the Slovene agricultural economy. Ultimately, several socioeconomic issues that are at the core of preserving and maintaining the regional and ecological balances in the Slovene countryside need to be addressed as well.
