Carlyle, George Price Boyce, and the Queen Anne Revival

The house, 35 Glebe Place Chelsea, West House, is an important early example of the Queen Anne Revival style and features in Mark Girouard's masterly survey of the Queen Anne movement, Sweetness and Light (1977).3 In chapter 4 Girouard quotes from Boyce's diary for 20 June 1872: "Called upon Mr. Robson and Mr. J. J. Stevenson about the proposed School Board school next door to me. On 3 March 1870 Boyce reported, "Slept in my house for the first time" (51). Since there was a proposed school to be next to West House it was inevitable that Boyce should be concerned about its design. According to Brookfield, Carlyle insisted that a companion join him for his walk as Tennyson prepared to read. 5 Crowther exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours from 1876 to the late 1890 s. In 1879, he was commissioned by the barrister Charles ChadwyckHealey (1845-1919), to record the buildings endangered by the expansion and modernization of Victorian London.
