It was a new idea to devote museum or archival space to the history of cinema as such, unlike collecting film materials that could help document the histories of other subjects. Gauthier reveals a wealth of agencies representing interests from agriculture to education to the avant-garde that took an active part and sometimes a combative stance against each other in conserving and promoting screenings of films.
