Zusammenfassung: | Forever the clinician, he was one of the first to embrace the medical and social challenges of the HIV epidemic in the early 1980s and was responsible for laying the foundations for one of the most progressive HIV units in the north. [...]he was responsible for the creation of dedicated dialysis facilities for patients infected with bloodborne viruses, a hyperbaric oxygen service for severe anaerobic infections, and a high care unit within the department, particularly for patients with complications of their HIV. A memorable example was the occasion when he acted the blind man to enable a bedbound patient to see his dog one last time. Generations of junior doctors witnessed this kindness and generosity when dealing with patients and staff and will never forget his distinct bedside manner and unconventional approach to teaching. |
