This catalogue documents the most comprehensive exhibition of Indonesian textiles held in the United States (at Washington, D.C., and New York in 1979), and the text provides the most informative study available of this splendid art form. It can be enjoyed as a beautiful book, starting with the stunning cover scene of a Balinese girl in costume, and continuing through the large clear photographs of textile examples--several in color--and well chosen scenes of rituals in Indonesia. But this approach would be inadequate, as Hilton Kramer noted in the New York Times, to the organizers' very serious purpose, which is to explore the roles of textiles...
