Gendered Justice in the American West: Women in Men's Penitentiaries

The inherent inequities in the court system that inflated female numbers in western prisons were intensified in prison itself for women of color. The rape of women prisoners occurred, but apparently much more common were male prison guards and officials who blatantly exploited women prisoners for sexual satisfaction. A notorious case was the son of a Texas prison-camp manager who guarded outdoor work details and regularly ordered women inmates to join him in the bushes.
