The rape of women prisoners occurred, but apparently much more common were male prison guards and officials who blatantly exploited women prisoners for sexual satisfaction. A notorious case was the son of a Texas prison-camp manager who guarded outdoor work details and regularly ordered women inmates to join him in the bushes.
