Zusammenfassung:Is the theatre a medium of textual exchange? This essay explores some of the foundational terms by which the New Criticism defined "performance" by defining the nature of "interpretation," particularly the forms of (finally illegitimate) interpretation assigned to actors. This orientation to the stage as a means of textual transmission surprisingly persists in a range of approaches to Shakespeare in performance, particularly where notions of the performance as a mode of "interpretation" are engaged.
