An abstract of an article by Dilger evaluating the implications of maternal infection and inflammation for offspring muscle development is presented. Maternal environment during gestation can have long-lasting and detrimental effects on offspring development, ultimately compromising the efficiency of production in livestock. In particular, skeletal muscle development during mid-gestation is especially sensitive to the effects of the in utero environment.
