Since neither man had any idea what to do next, my father went out to find an ambulance. Even in my own household, we listened to Western classical music (Brahms, Beethoven, Chopin, Mozart), ate European food (boiled potatoes, peas and carrots, mincemeat, steak), and spoke only English-except when my parents whispered to each other in German to keep me ignorant of some adult concern. Family relations, the Catholic Church, and various ethnic institutions (school, social club, football league) gave meaning to their lives.
