A call to consciousness: lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina

The issue's authors who contributed works herein, and the many multicultural educators and scholars (Michael Eric Dys-on, Geneva Gay, Linda Darling-Hammond, Jacqueline Irvine, and Gloria Ladson-Billings to name a few) referenced throughout these articles identified and addressed the lessons learned in the wake of Katrina, especially the intersecting of trauma and the hidden issues of color, race, culture, and poverty that cripple and negatively impact our public and higher education school systems' ability to be culturally responsive and sensitive to the students.
