Zusammenfassung: | Selected online catalog system designers and library managers met to discuss a draft report that focuses on costs related to various features of online catalogs. Few library administrators know the costs of acquiring and operating their online catalog, or how much money is saved when a system is implemented. An online catalog system is composed of a computer system, a database, and a telecommunications system. The cost is determined primarily by the size of the system and the features it provides. System size involves the number of bibliographic records, terminals, and functions. Estimating how much the online catalog will cost, and determining how to pay for it, are the primary aspects of the purchase or development and operation of the system. Pressures resulting from technological and economic change, are intrinsic to the online catalog. Library decision makers must face the dilemma of making large investments that must meet future requirements. |
