Zusammenfassung:The haematological indices in 26 workers who came in contact with radioactive and toxic wastes dumped in Koko village, Nigeria, were compared with those in 26 workers at a port 1 km away from the dump site and with those in 26 controls derived from Port Harcourt, which is about 200 km from the dump site. The site workers showed a macrocytic anaemia and a leucopenia that affected the minority components rather than the neutrophils or lymphocytes. Radiation injury was the likely cause of the findings in the site workers.
