Zusammenfassung:Mark has always had a deep appreciation for history, including the archaeological (Seaward, 1976b), and the need to archive material for future generations – a role he continues to perform for the Society. Amongst his numerous other honours and awards are the Acharius Medal of the International Association for Lichenology in 2006, Honorary Membership of the British Lichen Society in 1994 and the Ursula Duncan Award of that Society in 2003, the Polish Nummo Aureo (L’Ordre de’Or) in 1985, and an honorary DSc from Wrocław University the same year. There are 371 publications by Mark, alone or with others, currently listed in the Recent Literature on Lichens database (http://nhm2.uio.no/botanisk/lav/RLL/RLL.HTM), a stupendous record, but one that is incomplete and the real number must be over 400.
