Zusammenfassung:295 patients with Crohn's disease have been followed up for between one and thirty-eight years. 53 patients have died—more than twice the number expected for a general population of similar age and sex distribution. Excess deaths were significant both for males and females, and for those patients who had symptoms before the age of forty. Although the disease itself was mainly responsible for the excess mortality, side-effects of steroid therapy and malignancy of the gastrointestinal tract may also have contributed.
