"On the Shore Beyond the Sea": Black Missionaries from Arkansas in Africa during the 1890s

Of the 815 known African American emigrants to Liberia in the 1890s, over half left from Arkansas. The black missionary families reflected the dominant patterns of western culture at the turn of the century.
