[Display omitted] •A nickel(II) complex of a hemiaminal ether ligand (koneramine) that was resulted from an one-pot multicomponent protocol comprising N-substituted ethylenediamine, pyridine-2-carboxaldehyde, metal salts and alcohol/thiol, yielded a tetranuclear Ni4(μ3-O)4 cubane cluster.•The structural, electrochemical, thermal and physical properties of the cluster were studied and reported here.•Utilizing ethylenediamines of various substitutions and various metal salts might yield clusters of catalytic interest relevant to photosystem II.
