Kriebel has written a fascinating book about the practice of "powwowing" or Braucherei, which is faith healing among the Pennsylvania Dutch. There is also quite a bit of opposition to this form of faith healing among the conservative Mennonites and Amish because of the incorporation of elements of magic in this tradition. According to this book, a person who is "ferhext" will not eat or drink, becomes anxious, and loses confidence.
