[...]the study provides cogent evidence in support of its intuitive plausible central hypothesis regarding the lexical basis of grammatical borrowing. [...]in spite of the importance they are accorded in the opening chapters, disappointingly little attention is in fact paid to the spoken language and to socio-linguistic factors. [...]the presentation is at times pedantic: the 9-page Introduction, for example, has no fewer than 24 footnotes, many of them unnecessary.
