A review on antimicrobial properties of marine macroalgae extracts

In this review, a search for research studies on antimicrobial properties of marine macroalgae extracts was conducted. Many researchers have studied to determine the antimicrobial activity of macroalgae extracts. In several literatures it is stated that antimicrobial activity has been found in the extracts of green, brown and red macroalgae against fungi, yeast and bacteria. The antimicrobial compounds derived from consist of diverse groups of chemical compounds (aminoacids, fatty acid, terponoids, phlorotannins, phenolic compounds, steroids, halogenated ketones and alkanes etc.). The aim of this review was to investigate antimicrobial properties of marine macroalgae extracts and to indicate antimicrobial activities against microorganism.
