Zusammenfassung:Women novelists in the 19th century were viewed as inferior to male writers. A study of the weekly 'Athenaeum' from 1860-1900 reveals that the number of novels by women significantly rose from 1860-1900. However, the number of women's novels that were reviewed dropped because of the ever increasing total number of novels reviewed. Although women's novels were initially looked down by reviewers, gender equality was eventually accepted by 1900.
